Journaling 101: What I'm Learning About Choosing a Journal Printing Vendor in 2026–2027
Print-on-Demand or a Printing Vendor? And 10 Questions I'm Learning to Ask Before Spending My Money
As I continue my self-publishing journey, one thing I'm learning is that creating a beautiful journal is only part of the process. Finding the right company to print it is another story!
I've been researching print-on-demand services and printing vendors, including manufacturers on Alibaba. And I'm realizing that the lowest price doesn't always mean the best deal.
With the cost of materials, shipping, and everyday expenses affecting so many of us, I want to be especially careful about how I invest my money in my publishing business.
Print-on-Demand or a Printing Vendor?
One question I've been asking myself is whether it's better to use print-on-demand or order journals in bulk from a manufacturer.
Here's what I'm learning about both options:
Print-on-DemandPrinting VendorUsually no inventory to purchase upfrontMay require a minimum orderLower upfront financial riskPotentially lower cost per journal in larger quantitiesLimited paper, binding, and finishing choicesMore customization options may be availablePrinting and shipping may be handled for each orderI may need to manage storage, packaging, and shippingLess control over individual production batchesMore opportunities to approve samples and specifications
For me, print-on-demand seems like a practical way to test a journal before investing in inventory. But if I want specialty covers, spiral binding, premium paper, or larger quantities, working with a printing vendor might make more sense.
Neither option is automatically better. I'm learning that the right choice depends on the journal I'm creating, how many I expect to sell, and how much financial risk I'm comfortable taking.
What About the Economy in 2026–2027?
This is another part of my research that I don't want to overlook.
Printing costs can be affected by paper prices, labor, shipping rates, currency changes, import tariffs, and other expenses. These costs can change, especially when ordering from overseas.
That means a quote that looks affordable today may not be the final amount I pay.
I'm learning to ask for a complete written quote that includes manufacturing, samples, packaging, delivery, and any applicable import expenses. I also want to know what happens if the journals arrive damaged or don't match the sample I approved.
The Questions I Never Thought to Ask
At first, I would have focused on price, minimum order quantities, and how long printing would take.
Now I'm realizing I need to ask deeper questions.
Who actually manufactures the journals? How will the company keep my colors and materials consistent when I reorder? What happens if the shipment is delayed? Who protects my original designs?
These are the kinds of questions I want answered before I send a payment, not after a problem happens.
My FREE Journal Printing Research Checklist
As part of my research, I've put together a free printable resource:
10 Important Questions to Ask a Journal Printing Vendor in 2026–2027
It includes the questions I'm learning to ask, warning signs to watch for, and a vendor comparison worksheet so you can research three printing companies side by side.
Whether you're considering print-on-demand, Alibaba, or another printing company, I hope this resource helps you become more organized and confident about your next step. I'm still learning, still researching, and still discovering that publishing a journal involves much more than designing the cover.
And I'm sharing what I learn along the way.
Much Love,
Keep Journaling,
